Walmart Implements Purchase Limits on Pokémon TCG Products

As a notable development, Walmart has started enforcing purchase restrictions on how many Pokémon trading card products customers can buy during a single visit. This new rule officially takes effect starting November 5th, according to a company memo distributed to employees.

Tackling Reseller Problems

While not officially confirmed by Walmart, numerous sources suggest this decision was influenced by a widely shared social media clip that depicted a customer purchasing a massive amount of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The employee seen in the video received widespread backlash for allowing the bulk transaction to go through.

Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses

The new restriction states that shoppers may only buy a maximum of five trading card packs or boxes per store visit. Yet, the language has raised questions due to its lack of clarity. What exactly qualifies as a "box" remains unclear, and if someone could buy five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes remains ambiguous.

Additionally, because the restriction is based on each visit, in theory an eager reseller could return repeatedly—buying five items each time—to accumulate large quantities over several hours.

The Scalping Phenomenon

For the average collector, such efforts might seem excessive, yet for resellers, it's standard practice. Over the past few seasons, speculators have greatly contributed to frequent stockouts of Pokémon cards, driven by the TCG's growing fame.

Some resellers seek to sell unopened products at a markup, whereas some hunt for valuable pulls that can fetch sky-high values. For instance, the Mega Lucario ex card in recent releases has been listed at prices exceeding eight hundred dollars on various platforms.

Looking Ahead

The new rule aligns with the imminent release of the Phantasmal Flames set, scheduled for November 14th. Early listings indicate premium cards like the Mega Charizard X Ex listed for around fifteen hundred dollars, emphasizing the persistent interest and potential scalper target.

With any luck, Walmart's restrictions will help reduce mass buying and improve availability for true fans and everyday enthusiasts alike.
