During the bulk of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped inside a mental fortress constructed from the past of Henry Creel. Their quest for a way out in episode 6 leads them to experience a life-altering moment from Henry's youth—an event that potentially carries the key to defeating him for good.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern

After locating Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass found in Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the source of fear lies not within the cave. By aligning her view through the cap, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.

There, they witness a child version of Henry encounter an injured and paranoid man. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, striking Henry in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly wonders aloud. Essentially, yes, but the event involved more than a defensive killing.

In keeping with mysteries in volume 2, the significance of the mine shaft incident originates in the theatrical production The First Shadow.

The Philadelphia Experiment and A Spy's Mission

*The First Shadow* opens with the 1943 event, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a plane later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the captain, who returned in a unresponsive state with an altered blood type.

That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, sought to replicate this experiment in the Nevada desert. But a disloyal lab worker stole research materials to give to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. The man in the cavern is that employee.

So, What's in the Case?

Given what is revealed about his research, the case most likely held some of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon handling the contents, causing the development of his psychic abilities—powers he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.

A second theory, the box could have held dark matter that later made its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that Henry ended up in the Abyss, coming back hours later with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he fights the whispers of a malevolent force, similar to how Will Byers was influenced by the shadow monster in the past.

A Weaponized Emotion

His lasting fear associated with the mine shows how deeply scarring the event was for him. While he controls the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him remains. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his personal demons to become stronger.

Will's growth has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now is aware of what the monster's own weakness, and this may grant a key upper hand in the endgame conflict ahead.
