Studio 54 Fashion Makes a Revival: Fuzzy Jackets Have Become the Party Season's Must-Have
While the iconic New York venue Studio 54 closed almost four decades ago, its unique fashion influence remains powerful.
This season, the spotlight isn't on see-through bodysuits but on the plush, shaggy coats and stoles worn by style icons and party enthusiasts as well.
With the festive social calendar approaching, the distinctive Studio 54 coat is enjoying a major comeback.
Retail Statistics Shows the Popularity
Among the hottest items from a recent collaboration between a major retailer and a designer brand is a cropped, off-white, shaggy jacket with oversized lapels.
At another retailer, searches for brown fake fur coats have jumped 190% year on year.
Interest for pre-owned fuzzy finds is also rising, with searches for faux fur growing by over 250% in the past six months on a major resale platform.
"This is a one and done coat," says a lead fashion editor, adding that it acts as the main element of an ensemble.
The editor likes to style her personal oversized furry coat with low-rise jeans or tights and short shorts.
Television Fashion Mirrors the Trend
The style is replicated in a latest Netflix romantic comedy series, where a character sports a toffee-colored fuzzy jacket to a informal dinner.
When challenged about her bold look, the sister replies, "It's what you said to look fancy. It's fashion!"
The Rise of the "Boom Boom" Vibe
This look aligns with what a U.S. trend forecaster is terming "boom boom."
Inspired by the glamour and excess of late-80s New York, this aesthetic brings to mind wads of cash, bubbly, smoking, short skirts, carefree attitudes and, of course, fuzzy textures.
Like that era, the trend is set against a uncertain financial climate.
Boom boom is very much about dressing for the lifestyle you dream of rather than the one you have to endure.
Contemporary Fabrics and Playful Luxury
While real fur was omnipresent during Studio 54's peak, today's iterations are mostly made from shearling—a byproduct of the meat industry—or synthetic fabrics like acrylic.
The trend represents a knowing luxury—like a beloved character has taken charge with overblown silhouettes and unexpected hues.
Star Endorsement and Limited Drops
A London creator was an early instigator of this trend. Her fluffy coats with poodle-like proportions have been sported by top singers.
Due to strong interest, these coats are now only sold in exclusive collections. An upcoming release includes a pink and charcoal version similar to a large pom-pom, alongside animal and zebra-print versions with exaggerated fluffy trim.
"If you can only purchase one thing, you don't want it to be a plain sweater or a pair of ordinary pants, you want something dramatic," explains a publication editor-in-chief.
This feeling is echoed by a style head at a leading store, who describes it "an unexpected, playful touch" that doesn't require a complete ensemble.
The Ultimate Spirit Booster
Ultimately, the shaggy coat can act as a great mood lifter.
"It won't cost a fortune," notes the editor, "and it's going to make you feel glam when everything else is rather gloomy."
