Shoaib Bashir Makes Surprise Inclusion in English Ashes Squad

The English team has opted for a twelve-player squad just 48 hours ahead of the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir securing a surprise spot.

The 22-year-old’s inclusion suggests that the visiting team will wait until the day of the first Test to decide whether Perth Stadium pitch favor a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spinner.

Both pace bowlers are included in the selected group, indicating there are no concerns about their fast bowler's condition.

The other seamers round out the attack, with Carse most likely to be omitted if the spinner enters the final team.

Ground Conditions Favor Seamers

The England coach had been expected to choose an pace-only lineup on a venue that has hosted several past matches.

In those games, the majority of dismissals have been taken by pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.

Of those spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed the bulk, while all visiting spinners combined have just a handful.

At a venue renowned for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, pledged that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a side relying on seamers remains the probable decision.

Alternative Choices Considered

Previously there was rumors that Will Jacks could be parachuted into the team to offer some slow bowling while also bolstering the lower order.

But the coach has opted to keep faith with the young spinner, having stated previously that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the series.

In July, Lyon described Bashir as “decent,” adding that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still England’s top slow bowler.”

“This is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who haven’t done it in the past in these conditions,” he said of spin bowling in matches Down Under.

“I won't let my secrets out so opponents perform and excel out here.”
