No fewer than thirteen individuals perish and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
