Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
New research suggests that individuals who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing these drugs should be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified regain.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," described one woman.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
