Heavy Downpours Exacerbate Circumstances for Evacuated Gazans, UN Caution
Persistent precipitation over the past week have compounded the precarious circumstances of the vast number of displaced civilians in the region, as stated by aid agencies.
"Terrible" Weather Poses Severe Risks
A official characterized the previous night's conditions as "horrendous", with precipitation so intense that as much as 15cm (6in) of water gathered on the streets.
"The recent weather was exceptionally terrible for the families. The storms were so strong... And the gales were so forceful," noted the official.
Officials express significant anxiety that minors living in makeshift shelters in wet garments will fall victim to hypothermia and other sicknesses.
Deaths and Significant Loss
Health authorities have confirmed that one baby has succumbed from hypothermia and no fewer than 11 other people have lost their lives in roof cave-ins triggered by the storms.
Additional accounts put a higher number of casualties. Authorities stated that numerous residential buildings had fully given way and dozens had collapsed partially.
- Nearly 55,000 families affected by rains.
- More than 40 emergency shelters inundated.
- Countless residents forced to relocate again.
Aid Operations Seen as Insufficient
Groups have increased shipments of tents, warm covers and garments after the truce commenced, but they emphasize there is continues to be not enough aid reaching those in need.
"Officials are striving constantly to provide that aid and to hand it out, but the size of the needs is so vast that we still have a great number of individuals and children who are genuinely suffering every night," warned one representative.
Long-Term Concerns and Truce Plans
The subsequent part of the ceasefire includes arrangements for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with political arrangements, the withdrawal of troops, and other terms.
Aid groups have highlighted the need for "increased and sustained humanitarian assistance to respond to immediate and future requirements."
The hostilities was triggered by an offensive in October 2023. Following actions have caused a significant number of lives lost in the region, based on medical figures.
