Edwards and Gary O'Neil represent the initial candidates under consideration to succeed Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolves.
The previous coach was dismissed on Sunday following the squad's 10-match winless start to the Premier League campaign.
And both candidates - each of whom have previous links to the club - are among the names to be considered by the club leadership.
The manager is currently at another club, which would pose a possible hurdle to his hiring at Molineux.
Nevertheless the former Luton head coach - who made over a century of appearances for the club during his time as a player - is considered a leading candidate for the position.
The 42-year-old is said to have backing from the club directors as they start the search of appointing a fresh manager.
O'Neil is also emerging as a surprise candidate, although he would be a shock appointment considering he was sacked by the club in December last year.
The former West Ham player is out of work which means the club would not need to pay any compensation.
